DeSean Jackson has had an illustrious career in the NFL as a wide receiver. However, there is one major regret which still haunts him sometimes and he wishes to get another chance to amend it.
It’s the saga of his 2021 campaign when the Los Angeles Rams acquired him as an explosive weapon for the offensive line. However, after recording just 221 yards and a touchdown, the star wide receiver requested a trade in November of the same year and was released thereon. Interestingly, following that season, the Rams won their second Super Bowl trophy after finishing the season at 12-5 with the NFC West title.
Even though Jackson played barely seven games with the Rams that season, he was bestowed with his first Super Bowl ring. The biggest reason behind the three-time Pro Bowler requesting a trade was his struggle to land better opportunities after being overshadowed by Cooper Kupp, Van Jefferson, and Robert Woods.
Later on, the Rams head coach Sean McVay was asked why Jackson was honored with the Super Bowl ring when he already parted ways with the team in October. But instead of criticizing him in any manner, McVay acknowledged that Jackson didn’t get the opportunities he deserved in Los Angeles.
DeSean Jackson reflects on regret over his Rams tenure
During a recent appearance on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak,” the Super Bowl champion opened up about his fiasco with the Rams and revealed it is his biggest regret to date. He shared regretting not staying in Los Angeles and not contributing to the team’s victory to clinch the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
When I came to LA, you know Sean McVay brought me-- I was with him in Washington. He said... I’m gonna bring you here to be a vertical guy. My role in LA was almost wasn’t needed. So...For me, it was like I was not used to not being that guy, you know I was always that guy...So for me, I do regret it. I could have humbled myself and say, ‘You know what, let me just sit back. Let me play what they need.'DeSean Jackson said on Speak
The former NFL wide receiver believes he could have done more for the Rams but after he wasn’t getting better exposure on the field, he went up to McVay and requested to release him. Shortly afterwards, he was acquired by the Las Vegas Raiders eventually leading to his retirement in 2023.
