Former BMF belt holder Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal called out the current BMF champion Justin Gaethje for a potential super fight. Masvidal left the UFC after facing a decision loss against Gilbert Burns at UFC 287. Nevertheless, the Miami-based fighter never completely closed the doors of a return to combat sports.
In a recent interview with ESPN, “Gamebred” revealed that he would love to come back in the game for a shot at the BMF belt against Gaethje. He said, “ I think he should defend it against me. That’s what should happen if I was to come back to the sport. Despite the interest, the UFC might not entertain the fight for the foreseeable future. Gaethje could compete for the lightweight title in the future.
In his MMA career, Jorge Masvidal received a lot of love and admiration from his fans for his fighting style and resilience. Despite not winning the championship, his longevity in the fight game made him a people’s champ. His 5-second knockout against Ben Askren at UFC 239 is still the fastest in the sport’s history.
But a fight against “The Highlight” could be risky for the 38-year-old. Gaethje knocked out Masvidal’s teammate Dustin Poirier in the 2nd round to win the BMF championship. An in-form Gaethje against Jorge could have multiple outcomes, but right now, this matchup seems further away from a real-world scenario.
Jorge Masvidal praises Justin Gaethje by calling him a BMF
Despite his callout, Jorge Masvidal praised the BMF champion Justin Gaethje. At UFC 291, Gaethje knocked out fellow lightweight Dustin Poirier with a head kick in the 2nd round to clinch the BMF title. Gaethje became the only other guy in the UFC to hold the BMF belt after “Gamebred.”
In a recent interview, Masvidal explained the factors of Justin Gaethje that make him worthy of being a BMF. Masvidal advised Gaethje to remain active in the competition by taking on fights with a high risk. He admired Gaethje’s nature of taking on challenges without fearing their repercussions. He drew out similarities between him and “The Highlight” to showcase the qualities of a BMF.
His fearless nature was what Masvidal held at the top of the list to become a BMF. However, a matchup with the current champion entertains the 38-year-old. This opportunity could be enticing enough for “Gamebred” to return to the UFC.
