LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — The Falwells are at the center of a new documentary now airing on Hulu.
"God Forbid: The Sex Scandal That Brought Down a Dynasty" focuses on the perspective of Giancarlo Granda and his relationship with the Falwell family. Jerry Falwell Jr. was the President of Liberty University in Lynchburg at the time.
In 2020, the Reuters news agency published an interview with Granda, who said that he had a years-long sexual relationship with Becki Falwell and that her husband participated in some of the liaisons.
Granda was the former pool attendant at a Florida hotel where he says he met the couple and a sexual relationship began.
"As a pool attendant I would get hit on, but if I would've know that accepting this woman's invitation to go back to her hotel room would have led to a scandal involving the president of the largest Christian university in the world and President of the United States, I would have walked away and just enjoyed my private life," Granda says in a trailer Hulu posted about the show.Ultimately, Falwell did resign as President of Liberty shortly after news of the scandal broke.
The show's description on Hulu reads:
"A Miami pool boy finds himself trapped in a seven-year affair with a charming older woman and her husband, the Evangelical Trump stalwart Jerry Falwell Jr, as he becomes increasingly entangled with the Falwell’s seemingly perfect lives."
The trailer describes the Falwells as the "Southern Gatsbys," and shows produced imagery of partying and sexual activity.
Director Adam McKay, who had a part in hits like "The Big Short," "Vice" and "Don't Look Up," executive produced the series.
WSET reached out to the Falwells about the new series. We received an email back saying:
"We’ve gotten a lot of press calls over the last few weeks but I’ve had to tell them all that, while we would love to expose all the many lies and half-truths, on advice of counsel, we are not commenting due to pending litigation. Thank you for understanding," Jerry said. The statement provided by Falwell Jr. did not detail exactly what litigation is pending, or who is involved.
