In the late 1990s, he joined the State Representative, Mr. Dan Blue as an intern and after a few times, he was appointed as the Consumer Protection’s Assistant Attorney General by Roy Cooper, who was that time’s Attorney General of North Carolina. Josh served as a member of the North Carolina Senate from 2009 to 2016. From 2012 to 2016, he served as the Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP Of Counsel.

In 2017, He was elected as the 50th Attorney General of North Carolina and he sets the record of being the 1st Jew General Attorney of the city in 2020, he again lead in the election by beating Jim O’Neill. On 18th January 2023, Josh Stein formally announced that he will stand as a candidate in the 2024 elections of North Carolina for the post of Governor.
