The UFC community received shocking news recently via Ian Garry. Garry revealed to The Independent that Team Renegade banned him. Team Renegade is the gym of welterweight champion Leon Edwards. In his interview with the Independent, Garry revealed that Edwards and his coach, Dave Lovell, made this decision.
Garry trained at various gyms worldwide, from Chute Boxe Academy in Brazil to various gyms in the US and Canada. Moreover, the event hinted at training at City Kickboxing in New Zealand, the home of Israel Adesanya. However, the gym ban surprised him. He had only started training at Renegade recently to train with the best in the United Kingdom. This is what Garry had to say in his interview with the Independent.
Leon Edwards and his head coach asked me not to come back to Renegade; told me I’m not allowed to train there. They have asked me not to train there, because, Leon doesn’t want any insecurities or doubts on his own mats, within the gym.(H/T The Independent)Ian Machado Garry via The Independent
Garry is not challenging Edwards for the title soon. So, he found this confusing. Apparently, Edwards and his coach didn’t want potential threats on the training mats. However, Garry praised other Team Renegade members and also thanked Ash Begg and Tom Breese, who runs the gym. This situation highlights gym dynamics when two top contenders are in the same weight division.
Ian Garry last fought at UFC 292 when he demolished Neil Magny in a three-round affair. Geoff Neal was his original opponent, but his absence meant that Magny filled the spot on short notice. On the other hand, Leon Edwards is set to defend his title against Colby Covington at UFC 296. UFC 296 is the promotion’s last PPV event of 2023. Incidentally, Garry takes on Vicente Luque at UFC 296.
Ian Garry discusses training at different places on the Anik and Florian podcast
In the conversation with Jon Anik and Kenny Florian, Ian Machado Garry delved into his recent travels. Furthermore, he shared his training experiences and dreams for his fighting career. He’s deeply passionate about martial arts and underscored the need for continuous learning. Moreover, he believed in traveling to amass knowledge.
This is what Garry said to Anik and Florian about why he is not staying committed to a single gym:
Where's the fun in that? Where's the fun in, you know what I mean? What, like right if you wake up every single day, go to the same gym, do the same schedule, and train with the same people, where's the growth? You can, there's a see there's a ceiling there's a roof, and if you're in that gym, if you're in that same place, there's a roof that you will hit.Ian Garry via Anik and Florian podcast.
Garry didn’t just stop there. He talked about his unwavering commitment to training. Furthermore, he voiced his burning desire to be among the UFC’s best. Garry also felt frustrated for being overlooked for the EA Sports UFC video game. Showing his characteristic confidence, he boldly predicted that he’d grace the game’s cover within two years. Interestingly, Alexander Volkanovski, Valentina Shevchenko, and Israel Adesanya graced the cover in the recent version of the game. All have lost or faced setbacks recently, further enhancing the conspiracy theory of the curse of the UFC game cover.
