Ruby Da Cherry’s career
Ruby Da Cherry has shown his passion for music since he was three years old. By age seven, he was already playing violin and at 10, he was playing drums for his school band. Growing up, he worked as a waiter in his father’s restaurant until 2015. Then, he joined the band Vapo-Rats as its drummer but later left due to the members’ reported unseriousness.
In 2014, Cherry founded Suicideboys with his cousin, Scott Anthony Arceneaux Jr., popularly known as Scrim. The cousins were reportedly unhappy about their lives and founded the musical group, making a pact to commit suicide if they did not succeed.
Scrim revealed this in an interview with Mass Appeal, saying: “It was pretty much like cutting the hand, bleeding, and making a pact that there’s no plan B, that if this doesn’t happen by the time we’re 30, I’m blowing my head off.”
The duo’s first project was a three-track EP named Kill Yourself Part I: The $uicide $aga, which was released in June 2014 on SoundCloud and Bandcamp. They released a further nine iterations of the Kill Yourself series in the following months. However, the duo found a breakthrough following the release of the 2015 EP $outh $ide $uicide, a collaboration with established South Florida rapper Pouya. As of August 2023, the track has 263 million plays on the streaming platform, Spotify.
Suicideboys made their first mainstream music charts with the release of Radical $uicide in the summer of 2016. The five-track EP peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Rap charts. On September 7, 2018, the duo released their debut studio album, I Want to Die in New Orleans. They have released other successful albums in the following years such as Long Term Effects of Suffering (2021), Sing Me a Lullaby, and My Sweet Temptation (2022).
In addition, the duo released the YIN YANG TAPES series such as YIN YANG TAPES: Spring Season (1989-1990) released on May 5, 2023, YIN YANG TAPES: Summer Season (1989-1990) released on May 12, YIN YANG TAPES: Fall Season (1989-1990) released on May 19, and IN YANG TAPES: Winter Season (1989-1990), released on May 23.
The Suicideboys has gained a cult following in the hip-hop genre, mostly due to uncommon rap topics like suicidal ideation, anti-religion and depression. Their most viewed music video on YouTube is Paris with 184 million views, and the most streamed song on Spotify And to Those I Love, Thanks for Sticking Around with 544 million streams as of August 2023. The group were also featured in Billboard’s list titled “Billboard Dance’s 15 Artists to Watch in 2017.”
However, they have been heavily criticised for abrasive and offensive images, including their name, lyrical content, and behaviour. Other themes include violence and sexual content. The duo was also accused of using themes and insinuations of devil worship in their songs. But Arceneaux dismissed the accusations, stating that their use of satanic imagery is simply a metonym for the negative effects of money, drugs, and other items that have the potential to manipulate people.
Meanwhile, Cherry was involved in a side solo project when he released two solo mixtapes under the name “Oddy Nuff da Snow Leopard”. The mixtapes are The Jefe Tape (2012) and Pluto (2014). He has also released his debut solo album Tragic Love Songs To Study To [vol. 5] in 2023, under the stage name Duckboy.
