BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — Western Heating and Air says there are ways to help your air conditioner out as it works to keep you comfortable at home.
Zac Barnes, the Commercial Manager at Western Heating and Air says one of the first steps is understanding what your cooling system is designed for.
He said, "In the Treasure Valley our design parameters are set for 96 outside and 75 inside. This means if it's hotter than 96 and you are trying to cool it under 75 the system may not have the capacity to achieve it."
Barnes explained when temps are outside of the design parameters it's best to find a temperature you're comfortable with and hold it there.
Another easy thing you can do to keep up with your AC is to keep up to date on annual maintenance. Things like changing air filters or cleaning your outdoor condenser unit are easily done at home. Just make sure you are turning your breaker off and only using a hose or vacuum on the coils to clear them of debris. Also, make sure your attic or upstairs spaces are properly insulated, so your HVAC system isn't working any harder than it needs to.
If you are still not experiencing cooling check for iced refrigerant lines, and if they are frozen let them thaw before calling the professionals since they can't work with frozen coils.
