Sean O’Malley is one of the most recognizable fighters on the UFC roster, and this week he aims to become a household name after defeating Petr Yan.
Recently, the promotion has been ramping up its hype for the fighter, to elevate his star to the next level. Additionally, he markets himself well and appears in the right media, at the right time. Anatomy of a Fighter, a well-known and respected documentary series that features some of the biggest stars, also featured O’Malley a month back, preparing for his bout against Petr Yan.
Among other things, “Sugar’s” family is given screen time. In it, his father gives a brief sketch of “Sugar” as a child. This brings us to the focal question of this piece. Who is Sean O’Malley’s father?
His father is Dan O’Malley. While we do not much to go about his father’s background, we have anecdotes of him describing his son.
In a recent Anatomy of a Fighter documentary video posted by Will Harris, Dan O’Malley can be seen talking about his son’s initial dislike of the UFC. He said, “I think Sean knew he was a special athlete and just knew that he’s gonna do whatever he wants to do… Sean’s probably 12, sneaks down there, sees this, he’s like, ‘How can you guys watch this man? This stuff’s disgusting!’
Dan O’Malley once had a verbal scuffle with Luke Rockhold
Dan O’Malley, thus, relayed a sweet memory that he surely will relish for a lifetime. What is ironic is the fact that the young boy, who claimed to find the UFC ‘disgusting’ is now one of its most highly touted fighters. It is believed that it is but a matter of time before he becomes champion.
There is another story doing the rounds on the internet, but this time the roles have been reversed. Sean became the storyteller in this one, relaying an incident about Dan, his father.
Apparently, Dan O’Malley was in Whitefish, Montana, when he had a chance encounter with recently retired UFC fighter Luke Rockhold. According to him, “They were in Whitefish. Luke (Rockhold) was drunk and he kept telling my dad “Chito beat your son’s a**’. My dad said Luke was super (buzzed) but he kept saying ‘Chito beat your son’s a**’. Why would he be like that?”

It seems like fighters are more obsessed with Sean O’Malley’s solitary defeat to Marlon Vera than he is. Although it would not have been the most pleasant encounter, the American also said that there was no violence that ensued between the pair.
With “Sugar” being thrust into the limelight, we could potentially see more of him with Dan, as media houses start to shift their focus on him, as the it guy of the promotion.
